What to Look for in an ELD

FMCSA registration
Every device on your shortlist must be on the official FMCSA self-certified list. Verify the model number, not just the brand — vendors often sell deprecated hardware that's been pulled from the registry.
Hardware quality
Ruggedized housing, internal cellular modem, GPS & ECM connectivity. Bluetooth-only ELDs that pair to a driver's phone are technically compliant but a daily reliability headache.
Driver app quality
Drivers spend hours per day in the ELD app. If it crashes, freezes, or hides duty-status changes behind 4 taps, your drivers will hate you. Test on a real device before signing.
Back-office reporting
HOS violation alerts, IFTA mileage by state, CSA scoring trends, vehicle inspection logs. The data lives there whether you use it or not — pick a vendor whose UI doesn't make you regret looking.
TMS & fleet integrations
Does it push position + HOS into your TMS? Your factoring? Your safety auditor's portal? An ELD that won't talk to anything else just becomes another silo of data you have to pay someone to extract.
