How much lighter is the Great Dane Freedom Ultra flatbed?

Great Dane launched the Freedom Ultra flatbed in August 2026, positioning it as a weight-optimized platform for fleets hauling building materials, lumber, machinery, steel products, industrial freight, and coil. The trailer is built to order with bulkhead options, coil packages, securement systems, flooring choices, and axle configurations tailored to each fleet's operation.

The manufacturer has not released curb weight figures or payload-gain claims versus the prior Freedom flatbed generation. Without published specs, shops cannot yet calculate the tare-weight delta or the payload advantage on weight-sensitive loads like steel coil or bundled rebar.

What securement and flooring options are available?

Great Dane offers the Freedom Ultra with factory-installed coil packages for steel haulers, bulkhead configurations for lumber and pipe loads, and multiple securement-system layouts. Flooring options are available to match load type, though the manufacturer has not specified whether apitong, oak, or synthetic decking is standard or optional.

Fleets ordering the trailer can select axle configurations to match state bridge-law requirements and typical load weights. The configurability matters for small fleets that run mixed freight: a trailer spec'd for coil work with a reinforced deck and low-profile bulkhead may not suit a fleet that also hauls oversized machinery requiring removable stakes.

What this means for open-deck fleets

The Freedom Ultra enters a flatbed market where payload capacity often determines whether a load is legal or requires a second truck. A 500-pound tare-weight reduction on a steel-coil load can mean the difference between a legal 80,000-pound GVW and a permit load. Until Great Dane publishes curb weight and comparative payload figures, fleets cannot model the economic benefit of switching from an existing flatbed spec.

Open-deck operators should request detailed weight sheets and compare the Freedom Ultra's tare weight against their current trailers before ordering. The configurability is useful only if the base platform delivers a measurable payload gain without sacrificing deck strength or securement-point durability over a 10-year service life.
