J.B. Hunt AI platform now open to carriers after year-long test

What does Overroute AI actually do for carriers?

Overroute launched its AI freight execution platform to carriers and logistics operators on Tuesday after a year of co-design with J.B. Hunt. The platform uses AI agents to automate shipment coordination, read live data, catch exceptions, and manage customer communications. The agents work inside carriers' existing systems.

J.B. Hunt ran the technology across its business units on millions of loads before the public launch. Nick Hobbs, chief operating officer of J.B. Hunt, said the company operates one of the most complex freight networks in North America. That scale let the company test emerging technology in real conditions. Hobbs called Overroute a force multiplier that reduces friction and improves how freight gets executed every day.

Built inside real freight workflows, not in a lab

Overroute CEO Alex Reed said the agents were tested against enterprise logistics complexity. That includes exceptions, edge cases, change management, and human judgment calls. Reed described the platform as a new category in freight technology: agentic AI built alongside J.B. Hunt operators, inside real freight workflows, with real data, real users, and measurable outcomes.

The platform emerged from J.B. Hunt's collaboration with UP.Labs, an October 2024 initiative focused on freight technology. The year-long co-design period gave Overroute access to J.B. Hunt's operational data and workflow constraints before opening to outside carriers.

What this means for fleets under 10 trucks

Overroute is now available to carriers and logistics operators outside J.B. Hunt. The company did not disclose subscription pricing, implementation timelines, or minimum fleet size requirements. Carriers interested in the platform will need to contact Overroute directly to determine cost and fit.

The platform is designed to improve asset utilization over time. For small fleets, that typically means fewer empty miles, faster load matching, and less time on the phone coordinating pickups and deliveries. Whether the cost pencils out for a 3-truck or 5-truck fleet depends on the subscription price and how much dispatch time the AI agents actually save.

Fleets already using AI dispatch tools should compare Overroute's feature set and pricing against existing platforms. The J.B. Hunt validation matters, but only if the monthly cost fits a small fleet's budget and the agents integrate with the TMS and load boards already in use.

When to consider switching platforms

Carriers running manual dispatch or older TMS platforms may see the biggest time savings from AI agents. If you spend more than 10 hours a week coordinating shipments, managing customer updates, and chasing exceptions, an AI platform could free up that time for sales or driver retention work.

Before switching, ask Overroute for a cost breakdown and a trial period. Get the monthly subscription price, any per-load fees, and the integration requirements for your current ELD, TMS, and factoring setup. If the platform requires you to replace working software, factor that cost and downtime into the decision.

The public launch means carriers can now test Overroute against real loads and real workflows. That's the only way to know if the AI agents save enough dispatch time to justify the monthly cost.
