Overroute AI agents now handle millions of J.B. Hunt loads per year

Arkansas startup raised $5.5 million to bring freight-execution automation to enterprise carriers and private fleets after a year inside J.B. Hunt's network.

Overroute's AI agents are already working on millions of loads per year across all J.B. Hunt business units, and the Arkansas-based startup just raised $5.5 million to bring the same automation to other large carriers and private fleets.

What does Overroute actually do for a carrier?

Overroute automates the coordination work that happens between booking a load and delivering it. Its agents monitor shipments, flag problems, schedule deliveries, and communicate with drivers and customers. The software connects to the TMS, visibility platforms, and operational data a carrier already uses, so dispatchers and customer-service reps don't have to change tools or workflows.

J.B. Hunt said its Customer Experience representatives previously had to move between multiple systems, gather information, and format responses before sending customers updates. Overroute's agents handle parts of that process, giving reps more time for customer interactions that require a person.

How Overroute got built inside J.B. Hunt

Overroute grew out of a 2024 collaboration between J.B. Hunt and UP.Labs to develop technology around problems in freight transportation. The companies initially looked at several problems, including automating manual load execution and reducing billing complexity. They ultimately chose load execution, with J.B. Hunt providing access to its processes, technology, real-time data, and live loads to help build and test the system.

After a year of development and testing with J.B. Hunt, Overroute launched publicly in July. The work identified manual tasks throughout the life cycle of a load that could be augmented or automated with AI.

"We've validated Overroute inside one of the largest and most complex freight networks in North America. This funding gives us the capacity to take what we've learned there, continue investing aggressively in the product, and bring it to more enterprise fleets," Alex Reed, Overroute's CEO, said in the funding announcement.

What the $5.5 million round means for expansion

UP.Partners led the funding round, with EIC Rose Rock, 1834 Ventures, Tulane Ventures, and other investors participating. Overroute plans to use the money to accelerate product development and add employees as it expands to more large carriers and private fleets.

For new customers, Overroute says its agents can connect directly to a carrier's TMS, ERP, visibility platforms, and other operational data sources. The company says its deployment process starts with a specific workflow, such as monitoring, scheduling, or follow-up work, before expanding to additional tasks as the technology proves its value in production.

Will Urban, a venture partner at UP.Partners and an Overroute board member, highlighted the company's experience inside J.B. Hunt. "After decades in logistics, I've learned that great technology only matters if it works in the operation," Urban said in the funding announcement.

What Overroute is building next

Overroute is developing technology beyond individual coordination tasks. The company says its broader roadmap includes freight planning and asset optimization, moving from automating work around individual loads toward helping carriers make broader operational decisions.

Nick Hobbs, J.B. Hunt's chief operating officer and president of Highway and Final Mile Services, described the technology as a way to help employees rather than replace them. "We operate one of the most complex freight networks in North America, and that gives us a unique opportunity to take emerging technology and apply it at real scale," Hobbs said in July. "Overroute is an example of a broader strategy where we're using AI as a force multiplier within our expansive network to reduce friction and improve how freight gets executed every day."

What this means for carriers evaluating AI tools

Overroute's deployment inside J.B. Hunt gives the company a chance to show whether AI agents can handle coordination work at the scale of a large freight network as it expands to other carriers. The software is designed to work alongside the technology carriers already use, which matters for fleets that have already invested in a transportation management system and don't want to rip and replace.

For carriers evaluating AI tools, Overroute's year of testing on live loads inside J.B. Hunt's network is the kind of operational proof that matters more than a demo. The question for enterprise fleets and private carriers is whether the automation Overroute delivers on monitoring, scheduling, and customer communication is worth the cost of adding another layer to the tech stack. Overroute has not disclosed pricing.
