Carrier Transicold Launches Engineless Vector 8200 TRU for Dock Storage
First multi-temp unit from Carrier that runs on shore power alone, no diesel engine. Four evaporator configs cool one to three trailer compartments.

What does the Vector 8200 do that other TRUs don't?
Carrier Transicold's Vector 8200 is the company's first trailer refrigeration unit with no onboard engine and multi-temperature capability. It runs entirely on facility shore power, eliminating diesel fuel burn and exhaust at the dock. Four remote evaporator options let it cool trailers with one, two, or three compartments simultaneously, each at a different setpoint if needed.
The unit targets stationary cold storage, where trailers sit at a warehouse or distribution center for hours or days. Greg Turner, associate director of trailer product management for Carrier Transicold, said the design addresses facilities that want temperature control without TRU engine noise or direct emissions on site.
Cooling capacity and temperature range
The Vector 8200 handles refrigerated, frozen, and deep-frozen loads. Carrier did not publish exact BTU or kilowatt figures in the announcement, stating only that cooling capacity scales "up to" an unspecified maximum. The unit can hold product at 35°F or drop to minus 20°F, covering the range most LTL and food-distribution fleets run.
Electric heating and defrost cycles run while the trailer is plugged in, so the unit can maintain setpoint in cold ambient conditions without switching to a diesel genset.
What this means for dock-door operations
Fleets that stage loaded trailers at their own yards or customer facilities for extended periods currently face a choice: leave the TRU diesel engine idling, which burns fuel and triggers local anti-idling ordinances, or shut it down and risk product temperature excursions. Shore-power TRUs solve that, but until now Carrier's engineless models could not handle multi-compartment trailers.
The Vector 8200 closes that gap. A fleet running mixed loads (fresh produce in the nose, frozen in the tail) can now drop the trailer at a cold-storage facility, plug it in, and maintain both zones without diesel burn. That matters in California, where CARB's TRU rule phases out older diesel units and many warehouses already have shore-power infrastructure.
Serviceability and parts commonality
Carrier has not disclosed whether the Vector 8200 shares compressor, control board, or evaporator components with the company's existing Vector line. That will determine how much new inventory a shop has to stock and whether technicians trained on Vector 1550 or 1950 units can service the 8200 without additional certification.
The unit's reliance on facility power also means uptime depends on the dock's electrical infrastructure. A tripped breaker or inadequate amperage at the pedestal will shut the unit down just as surely as a failed diesel engine, and the trailer operator has no backup genset to fall back on.
When it ships and what it costs
Carrier Transicold announced the Vector 8200 in late August 2026 but did not provide a production start date, MSRP, or expected delivery lead time. Fleets interested in spec'ing the unit for new trailers or retrofitting existing boxes will need to contact Carrier directly for pricing and availability.
The company also did not specify whether the Vector 8200 qualifies for any state or federal incentive programs tied to zero-emission transport refrigeration, though California's HVIP and similar programs in other states have historically covered electric TRUs when paired with eligible trailers.
