Daimler Trucks to Open Largest U.S. Plant in 2029, Closes Portland

DTNA will shutter its 79-year-old Portland facility in October, cutting 400 jobs, while planning a new truck plant it says will be its largest U.S. manufacturing site.

When will the new Daimler Trucks plant open?

Daimler Truck North America will open a new U.S. truck manufacturing plant in 2029, CEO John O'Leary told reporters August 6. The facility will be the company's largest truck plant in the United States when operational, though DTNA has not disclosed the location, production capacity, or investment total.

The announcement came one week after DTNA notified Oregon officials it will permanently close its Portland Truck Manufacturing plant at the end of October 2026, eliminating nearly 400 jobs. Freightliner opened its first Portland facility in 1947, making the closure the end of a 79-year manufacturing run in the city.

Why is DTNA closing Portland now?

DTNA previously planned to close Portland in 2010 but kept the plant running after securing a large military order. No similar reprieve appears likely this time. The company framed the closure and new-plant investment as a shift toward a "more flexible, resilient" manufacturing network aligned with customer needs, O'Leary said in a statement.

The move follows a historically weak first quarter for DTNA. Truck sales dropped 26% year-over-year in Q1 2026, the company's lowest first-quarter sales since 2010, executives said during the May earnings call. That cautious tone contrasts sharply with the scale of the new-plant commitment announced three months later.

What does a larger plant mean for production?

DTNA has not released specs for the new facility, so fleet managers cannot yet gauge how the plant will affect build slots, lead times, or regional parts availability. The company operates assembly plants in Cleveland, North Carolina (Freightliner Custom Chassis), Mount Holly, North Carolina (Thomas Built Buses), and Madras, Oregon (Western Star), in addition to the Portland plant slated for closure.

If the new plant consolidates Portland's output and adds capacity, fleets ordering Freightliner Cascadias or Western Star 49X models could see shorter lead times by 2030, assuming DTNA staffs the facility and ramps production without the supply-chain delays that plagued 2021-2023 builds. If the plant focuses on next-generation powertrains (battery-electric or hydrogen fuel-cell variants), the capacity question becomes whether DTNA can scale EV production fast enough to meet 2027 EPA emissions rules without cannibalizing diesel build slots.

What happens to Portland workers and parts supply?

The 400 Portland jobs will disappear by the end of October. DTNA has not said whether it will offer relocation packages or priority hiring at the new plant, which will not open for three years. For fleets running trucks built in Portland, the closure itself does not affect parts availability, warranty service continues through the dealer network, but the loss of institutional knowledge at a plant that built Freightliners for eight decades could complicate future service bulletins if engineering staff scatter.

Small fleets in the Pacific Northwest may face longer turnaround times for warranty work or recalls if DTNA consolidates regional service capacity after the closure. The Madras, Oregon Western Star plant remains open, but it is a specialty facility focused on severe-duty vocational chassis, not the Class 8 highway tractors Portland assembled.

How does this fit the broader truck market?

DTNA's Q1 2026 sales were the weakest since 2010, yet the company is committing to its largest U.S. plant. That gap suggests DTNA expects the current downturn to end before 2029 and sees long-term demand (likely driven by fleet renewals deferred during the 2023-2026 freight recession and EPA-mandated powertrain updates) justifying the capacity.

Other OEMs have signaled similar optimism. Daimler Truck Financial said in July that the four-year freight recession is ending, citing EPA emissions rules and data-center construction as demand drivers. If that forecast holds, fleets that delayed truck purchases through 2024-2026 will hit the order boards in 2027-2028, and a larger DTNA plant would be positioned to capture that surge.

The risk for small fleets is that DTNA's new facility prioritizes high-volume customers (national LTL carriers, large private fleets) over spot orders from owner-operators or regional carriers. If build slots tighten again in 2029-2030, the same dynamics that pushed lead times to 12-plus months in 2021-2022 could return, and a plant optimized for efficiency may not accommodate the custom specs a 10-truck fleet needs.

What to watch

DTNA has not disclosed the new plant's location, which will determine state tax incentives, proximity to supplier networks, and labor-market depth. A site in the Southeast (near existing North Carolina plants) would consolidate logistics but could strain regional skilled-labor supply. A Midwest location would put the plant closer to Cummins and Eaton facilities, potentially shortening parts lead times for diesel builds.

Fleets should also watch whether DTNA announces EV-specific production lines at the new plant. If the facility is designed around battery-electric assembly (with dedicated pack-integration bays and high-voltage test cells), it signals DTNA expects EV adoption to accelerate faster than current sales suggest. If the plant mirrors traditional diesel assembly, DTNA is betting the 2027 EPA rules will not force a wholesale shift to zero-emission powertrains by decade's end.

Portland's closure removes nearly 400 jobs and a plant that has built Freightliners since 1947. The new facility will not replace those jobs for three years, and there is no guarantee the workers who lose positions in October will be the ones hired in 2029.
