EV Charging Infrastructure: Utility Lead Times Now the Longest Delay

Fleets deploying battery-electric trucks report utility timelines stretch months beyond initial estimates, pushing project completion dates regardless of truck or charger readiness.

How long does it take to bring EV charging capacity online?

Utility timelines are now the longest variable in electric-truck deployment, according to fleets that have installed charging infrastructure. Even small delays at the utility level cascade into months-long waits, regardless of whether the trucks or chargers are ready. NFI's biggest lesson from EV rollout was to involve the utility provider from the very beginning, because utility infrastructure plans are locked in several years in advance.

Mike McDonald of B-H Transfer, who has worked with electric trucks at previous jobs, said utility providers are making infrastructure plans several years out. Delays at that level ripple through an entire project timeline. The implication for small fleets: if you are planning to spec battery-electric tractors in 2027, the utility conversation needs to start now, not when the trucks arrive.

Managing demand charges and uptime

Charging strategy matters as much as charger count. Fleets are learning to manage charging schedules to avoid peak demand charges, which can double the effective cost per kilowatt-hour in some utility territories. Some are exploring battery storage to help manage costs or provide backup power during grid outages. Service response times for charger failures also factor into uptime planning, since a down charger can idle multiple trucks if the fleet lacks redundancy.

Pitt Ohio's advice is to think ahead and future-proof the installation when investing in charging infrastructure. Installing enough capacity up front for future growth is usually easier and less expensive than rebuilding later. That means sizing the electrical service, conduit runs, and panel capacity for the full planned fleet, even if only a handful of trucks are on order today.

What this means for small fleets

For owner-operators or small fleets considering a single electric truck, the utility lead time is the same whether you are installing one charger or ten. That makes the per-truck infrastructure cost punishing at small scale. The workaround some fleets are exploring: shared charging at terminals or third-party charging networks, though availability outside major metro freight lanes remains sparse. The takeaway is that EV truck deployment is not a truck-purchase decision, it is a facility-infrastructure project with a utility company as the critical path, and that timeline is outside the fleet's control.
