Fontaine Fusion flatbed recall: do not use trailers, company warns
Hydrogen embrittlement from galvanizing process may crack main beams under load; structural failure risk prompts immediate grounding order.

Fontaine has issued a do-not-use recall for Fusion flatbed trailers after hydrogen embrittlement was discovered in high-strength steel main beams that underwent hot-dip galvanizing.
How many Fontaine Fusion flatbeds are affected?
The recall notice does not specify the exact number of affected trailers. Fontaine states that only a small number of trailers have exhibited hydrogen embrittlement to date, and those affected units have continued to operate even after cracking was observed.
What causes hydrogen embrittlement in galvanized steel?
The affected trailers were manufactured using high-strength steel components that were subsequently hot-dip galvanized. Under certain processing conditions during galvanizing, hydrogen may have been introduced into the steel. High-strength steels are particularly susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement, the hydrogen atoms diffuse into the steel's crystal lattice and reduce ductility, making the material brittle and prone to cracking under stress.
Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing steel in molten zinc at approximately 840°F. If the steel is not properly pre-cleaned or if pickling acids are not fully neutralized before the zinc bath, residual hydrogen from the acid-cleaning stage can become trapped in the steel during the high-temperature process. The risk is higher in steels with tensile strength above 150 ksi, exactly the grade used in trailer main beams to save weight while maintaining load capacity.
What is the structural risk?
Continued use may allow cracks to propagate, reducing the structural integrity of the trailer's main beams. Though it has not yet been observed in the field, if cracking progresses it may result in partial or complete fracturing of the main beam under load. That could lead to loss of load support or structural failure during operation.
The main beams are the longitudinal I-beams or C-channels that run the length of a flatbed trailer and carry the primary bending loads. A fracture in one beam shifts load to the remaining beams and the deck structure, which are not designed to carry the full rated capacity alone. A complete fracture of multiple beams under a heavy load, coiled steel, machinery, construction materials, would drop the cargo onto the roadway.
Why the do-not-use order?
Fontaine's warning to owners not to use the trailers is unusually strict. Most recalls allow continued operation with heightened inspection intervals while parts are sourced and repair procedures finalized. A grounding order typically signals that the failure mode is sudden rather than progressive, or that visual inspection cannot reliably detect the defect before failure.
Hydrogen embrittlement cracks often initiate internally or in high-stress zones that are not visible during a walk-around. The cracks can remain stable for thousands of miles, then propagate rapidly once a threshold stress is reached, a pothole at highway speed, a sharp turn with an off-center load, a hard brake on rough pavement. The recall notice's reference to trailers that "have continued to operate with observed cracking" suggests Fontaine has field data showing that visible cracks do not necessarily precede catastrophic failure by a predictable margin.
What fleets should do now
Owners of Fontaine Fusion flatbeds should immediately check whether their trailers fall within the affected manufacturing window. Fontaine has not publicly released VIN ranges or build dates, so fleets will need to contact the manufacturer directly.
Trailers confirmed as part of the recall should be pulled from service until Fontaine provides a remedy: likely replacement of the main beams or the entire trailer frame. Do not attempt field repairs. Welding or drilling stop-holes in embrittled steel can accelerate crack propagation rather than arrest it.
Fleets operating affected trailers should document the grounding in their maintenance records and notify their insurance carrier. If a trailer was already scheduled for a load, the load will need to be transferred to a different unit. Detention and repower costs are the fleet's to absorb unless Fontaine offers compensation beyond the recall remedy itself.
Hydrogen embrittlement in trailer manufacturing
This is not the first time hydrogen embrittlement has surfaced in trailer construction. In 2019, a major van-trailer manufacturer recalled several hundred units after cracks appeared in galvanized crossmembers. The root cause was traced to an outside galvanizer that had changed its acid-pickling chemistry without adjusting baking time: the post-galvanize bake that drives residual hydrogen out of the steel.
High-strength steels have become more common in trailer frames as manufacturers chase weight savings to maximize payload. A 53-foot flatbed built with 80 ksi steel might weigh 13,500 pounds; the same trailer in 120 ksi steel drops to 11,800 pounds, adding 1,700 pounds of revenue payload. But higher-strength steels require tighter process control during galvanizing, and not all galvanizing shops have the quality systems to handle them consistently.
Fleets that spec custom trailers with high-strength steel frames should ask the OEM which galvanizer will be used, whether that shop is certified to handle high-strength steels, and whether the galvanizing process includes a post-galvanize bake cycle. The answer to the last question should be yes for any steel above 100 ksi tensile strength.
What this means for Fontaine Fusion resale and residual value
Trailers subject to a do-not-use recall take a residual-value hit even after the recall remedy is completed. Buyers in the used market will discount a trailer with a frame-recall history by 10 to 20 percent compared to a clean-history unit of the same age and mileage. Leasing companies and fleet-finance arms will adjust residual assumptions for affected VINs, which may trigger early lease buyouts or require fleets to post additional collateral if the trailer was financed.
Fleets that purchased Fontaine Fusion flatbeds in the past 18 months and financed them at 80 percent loan-to-value may find themselves underwater if the recall depresses market value below the remaining loan balance. That becomes a problem if the fleet needs to sell or trade the trailer before the loan matures.
