Geotab fuel card saves $24 per fill-up if you pick the cheap pump
Geotab's new fleet card ties to vehicle data and covers 34,000 U.S. fuel stops. The company's own analysis shows drivers pick the low-price station one in six times.

How much can a small fleet save by choosing the cheaper fuel stop?
Geotab analyzed 419,000 diesel fill-ups across 660 U.S. fleets and found price differences as high as 77 cents per gallon in the same town during the same week. For a 75-gallon fill-up, that's $58 left on the table. The company estimates that choosing the lower-priced station saves about $24 per fill-up. At 200 fill-ups a year, that's roughly $4,700 per truck annually.
Those figures come from Geotab's fuel-stop analysis, not from measured savings using the new card. The card itself launched in October 2026 and provides access to discounted fuel pricing at more than 34,000 U.S. fueling locations. The Geotab Drive app helps drivers find nearby lower-priced fuel stops.
What fleets under 100 trucks actually do at the pump
Among fleets with fewer than 100 vehicles, Geotab found that drivers chose the lower-priced option about one in six times. That means five out of six fill-ups happen at a station that isn't the cheapest option within reach.
For a three-truck fleet running 200 fill-ups per truck per year, the math is straightforward. If all three drivers picked the cheaper pump every time, the fleet would save $14,100 annually (three trucks times $4,700). If drivers keep choosing the low-price station one in six times, the fleet saves about $2,350 a year. The difference between those two outcomes is $11,750, which is the cost of not routing to the cheaper pump.
What the card covers beyond fuel
The Geotab card supports purchases for maintenance, tolls, parking, truck scales, towing, roadside assistance, and lumper services. Geotab did not disclose transaction fees, monthly account fees, or whether the card requires a Geotab telematics subscription.
For fleets already running Geotab telematics, the card ties vehicle data to fuel purchases. That means a dispatcher can see which truck filled up, where, when, and at what price, without manual logs. For fleets not yet on Geotab, the card may require a telematics subscription to unlock the full fuel-stop routing feature in the Drive app.
When fuel-stop selection matters more than the card network
The 77-cent spread Geotab measured is the high end. Most same-town price differences run smaller, but even a 20-cent gap on a 75-gallon fill-up is $15. Over 200 fill-ups, that's $3,000 per truck.
A fuel card with discounts at 34,000 locations helps only if drivers actually use those locations and pick the cheaper ones. Geotab's one-in-six figure suggests that most drivers either don't check prices or don't route to the low-price pump. A card that shows nearby prices in the app solves the information problem. It doesn't solve the routing problem unless the dispatcher or driver changes behavior.
For owner-operators running their own dispatch, the takeaway is simple: check the app before every fill-up. For small-fleet owners with drivers on the road, the takeaway is harder: you need a process that makes drivers care about fuel cost as much as you do. That usually means a fuel bonus tied to cost per gallon or a weekly settlement that shows fuel savings by driver.
What this means for your fuel budget this quarter
If you run three trucks and your drivers fill up 200 times a year per truck, the difference between always picking the cheap pump and picking it one in six times is about $11,750 a year, or roughly $980 a month. That's enough to cover a truck payment or a quarterly insurance installment.
The Geotab card gives drivers the information. The question is whether your drivers will use it. If you don't already track fuel cost per gallon by driver, start this week. Pull your fuel card statements, divide total gallons into total cost for each driver, and post the numbers. Drivers who see their name at the top or bottom of the list change behavior fast.
Geotab has not published pricing for the card or disclosed whether it requires a telematics subscription. Fleets interested in the card should ask Geotab directly about monthly fees, transaction fees, and subscription requirements before signing up.
