Tesla Semi Demo Shows 180-Mile Range Limit, 8-Hour Charge Times

Northeast carrier Intracoastal Trucking ran a two-week trial on urban delivery routes. Drivers praised acceleration and visibility but nearly depleted the battery on a 180-mile run. The carrier plans to order five units for an 8-mile shuttle operation in 2027.

Intracoastal Trucking, a 100-truck truckload carrier based in the Northeast, put a Tesla Semi through a two-week demo on urban delivery corridors and found the truck required active energy management to complete a 180-mile route. One driver nearly depleted the battery before returning to base. The long-range Tesla Semi is rated at 525 miles, but Intracoastal has not achieved that figure in real-world operation.

The carrier assigned two drivers to the demo. One ran a stop-and-go shuttle operation. The other ran roughly 180-mile lengths of haul through Paterson, New Jersey, Astoria, Queens, and Long Island before returning via the Cross Bronx Expressway. The shuttle driver praised the acceleration, ride quietness, and cab visibility. The longer-haul driver found the truck required leaning on cruise control and regenerative braking rather than the friction brake.

"He actually pressed the battery charge and almost didn't get back," said Bob Lewis of Intracoastal Trucking, describing the longer-haul driver's early experience. "So he found that he had to manage the truck by using more of the cruise control. The regenerative braking is definitely a thing."

What does it cost to charge the Tesla Semi?

Charging infrastructure remains the sharpest constraint for Northeast operators. The only location where Intracoastal can currently charge the demo truck is in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The process takes 8 to 10 hours to reach 96% state of charge using what Lewis called a "2.0" charger. Tesla's Megacharger, which Lewis said could be installed at Intracoastal's facility, cuts that to 20 minutes, but the company noted there is no Megacharger coverage in the Lehigh Valley, where it runs significant freight volume. Tesla has indicated it will place Megachargers at truck stops across Pennsylvania and New Jersey, though no firm timeline was given.

The business case sharpens considerably on predictable, short routes. Lewis said Intracoastal runs 6,000 loads per year on an 8-mile shuttle between a manufacturing plant and a co-packer. That use case is where the carrier intends to deploy its first five Semis, targeted for delivery in 2027. The demo was originally initiated at the request of a customer with zero-emissions goals, and Lewis noted that other prospective customers have reached out after learning about the demo, citing their own sustainability requirements.

What maintenance does the Tesla Semi eliminate?

Projected savings stem from the elimination of engine oil, filters, a transmission, turbocharger, DPF, and DEF system. Lewis also cited reduced downtime as an underappreciated variable, noting it is not uncommon for a conventional truck to sit for a week waiting on parts, a cost that rarely gets fully accounted for. The carrier did not provide a dollar figure for projected maintenance savings or total cost of ownership.

How do drivers adapt to the center-seat driving position?

The cab's center-seat driving position drew initial hesitation from drivers, who instinctively compensated for lane position as they would from a left-side seat. Lewis said that adjustment largely resolved itself within about a day of driving. Real-time telematics accessible via smartphone, showing speed, power consumption, cab temperature, and charging status, have also given Lewis visibility into daily operations he described as a notable operational advantage.

When will Intracoastal add Tesla Semis to the fleet?

Intracoastal plans to add five Tesla Semis to the fleet as early as 2027 if the economics hold up. The carrier operates 100 trucks and 600 trailers. The Tesla Semi is rated at 525 miles for the long-range variant and 325 miles for a shorter-range variant. Intracoastal has not achieved 525 miles in real-world operation during the two-week demo.

The carrier's deployment strategy focuses on the 8-mile shuttle operation, where the truck would complete multiple round trips per day without requiring mid-shift charging. The longer 180-mile routes that nearly depleted the battery during the demo are not part of the initial rollout plan. Lewis did not specify whether the carrier would order the long-range or shorter-range variant, or provide an expected delivery date beyond 2027.

What this means for small fleets considering electric trucks

The Intracoastal demo underscores the gap between rated range and real-world range on urban delivery routes with stop-and-go traffic and highway segments. A 180-mile route nearly depleted the battery on a truck rated at 525 miles, suggesting that real-world range may be closer to 200 miles under mixed driving conditions. Carriers running predictable short-haul shuttle operations with access to overnight charging may find the economics viable. Carriers running longer routes or operating in regions without Megacharger coverage face an 8-to-10-hour charge window that limits the truck to single-shift operation unless the carrier can install a Megacharger on-site.

The maintenance savings are real but unquantified in this demo. The elimination of engine oil, filters, transmission, turbocharger, DPF, and DEF system reduces the parts count and the number of failure points. The downtime reduction Lewis cited is harder to model without fleet-scale data on Tesla Semi parts availability and service-network coverage. A conventional truck waiting a week for a turbo or DPF is a known cost. A Tesla Semi waiting for a battery module or inverter replacement is an unknown cost until more units are in service.

The center-seat driving position and real-time telematics are operational details that matter less than range and charge time for most fleets. The adjustment period Lewis described is short. The telematics visibility is useful but not unique to Tesla. The 8-to-10-hour charge time on a 2.0 charger and the absence of Megacharger coverage in the Lehigh Valley are the hard constraints that will determine whether the truck works for a given operation.
