Why do trailer tire failures hurt driver retention?

Tire-related strandings are one of the more avoidable problems a fleet can hand a driver, according to Mark Wallin, president and general manager of Phillips Connect. Driver retention is the line item every operations leader is already watching, and a preventable roadside breakdown over a tire that could have been caught in the yard is a retention problem, not just a maintenance problem.

The tire program that knows which trailers, which positions, and which routes are punishing tires hardest is the program that buys fewer of them. Tire wear is not random. Faster wear shortens the time between replacements, and a casing that gets destroyed running disproportionately low is a casing that cannot be retreaded.

What trailer telematics data catches tire problems before they strand drivers?

The data the trailer can produce on tire pressure, temperature, and wheel-end behavior makes the problem visible to operations, dispatch, safety, risk, the driver, and the C-suite at the same time with the same numbers. Who owns the tire conversation now?

The maintenance leader has been carrying the tire conversation alone for too long, Wallin said. The tire budget will stay in maintenance, but the consequences of tire failures do not stop at the shop door. Tire monitoring hardware shifts the conversation from a maintenance line item to an operational visibility problem that touches dispatch, safety, and driver retention.

What this means for small fleets

Small fleets running older trailers without tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are flying blind on which trailers are eating casings fastest. A three-truck fleet that loses a driver over a preventable tire stranding pays more in recruiting and training costs than a TPMS retrofit would cost. The hardware makes tire wear patterns visible before a blowout puts a driver on the shoulder for three hours waiting for road service.

Fleets that track tire pressure, temperature, and wheel-end behavior by trailer and position can identify which routes or load types are destroying casings before they reach retreadable mileage. That visibility turns tire replacement from a reactive maintenance expense into a predictable cost tied to specific operational patterns.
