Motive AI Dashcam Plus combines telematics and camera in single unit

New horizontal-profile device runs 30 AI models simultaneously on Qualcomm processor, adds stereo-vision collision avoidance and license-plate recognition.

Motive launched the AI Dashcam Plus at its Vision 26 conference in Nashville, combining telematics and camera hardware into a single horizontal-profile unit. The device runs on a Qualcomm AI processor with three times the processing power of prior generations, enabling it to run more than 30 AI models simultaneously.

What does the combined telematics-camera unit change for installation?

The integrated design eliminates the need for separate telematics and camera boxes. "We combined telematics and cameras into one device. That means faster install, one point of failure instead of two," said Shoaib Makani, co-founder and CEO of Motive. The horizontal profile is designed to reduce windshield obstruction compared to vertical-mount units.

Fleets running separate ELD and dashcam hardware currently face dual installation labor, two warranty tracks, and two potential failure points. The single-unit design cuts install time and reduces the number of vendor relationships a shop has to manage when a unit fails in the field.

How does the collision avoidance system differ from forward collision warning?

The AI Dashcam Plus uses two road-facing cameras to create stereo vision that models depth and tracks the trajectories of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and animals in real time. Traditional forward collision warning systems measure distance frame by frame without modeling object movement.

"Instead of measuring distance frame by frame, we model how every object is moving through space," said Nihar Gupta, vice president of product at Motive. "We reason about which trajectory puts your driver at risk, and we alert seconds earlier while there's still time to act."

The trajectory-based approach is intended to reduce false alerts by distinguishing between a vehicle merging safely and one cutting across the truck's path. Fleets that have dealt with driver pushback on nuisance alerts may see adoption improve if the system proves more selective in practice.

What other AI features does the unit include?

The platform adds automated license plate recognition using a high-resolution zoom lens. This capability supports yard management and security applications where fleets need to log which trailers or third-party equipment entered a terminal.

The device also includes AI-powered speed sign detection. It reads posted limits directly from roadside signs rather than relying on map databases, which can lag behind temporary construction zones or recent limit changes. This addresses a known gap in GPS-based speed monitoring, where a driver may be flagged for speeding in a zone where the map data is outdated.

What is the AI OmniCam Plus?

Motive also introduced the AI OmniCam Plus, a 360-degree camera system that supports four HD camera inputs and provides real-time visibility on an in-cab monitor. Right and left views activate automatically with turn signals, and reverse views appear instantly when backing up.

The system is aimed at fleets operating in tight urban terminals or construction sites where blind-spot visibility drives backing incidents. The automatic view switching removes the step of a driver manually toggling between camera feeds, which can delay reaction time during low-speed maneuvering.

What does this mean for fleets already running Motive hardware?

Fleets with existing Motive ELD and dashcam installations will need to evaluate whether the performance gain from the new processor and stereo-vision collision avoidance justifies a hardware refresh. Motive did not announce pricing or trade-in terms for the AI Dashcam Plus.

The shift to a single integrated unit may complicate partial upgrades. A fleet that wants to add camera capability to trucks currently running Motive ELDs will need to replace the ELD rather than add a standalone camera, unless Motive continues to offer the prior-generation split hardware.

Fleets considering a head-to-head look at TMS platforms that integrate with telematics should confirm whether the AI Dashcam Plus supports the same API connections as prior Motive hardware. Any change in data-feed structure could require updates to dispatch or maintenance software that pulls camera events or HOS data.

When does the AI Dashcam Plus ship?

Motive announced the product roadmap at Vision 26 on May 27 but did not provide a ship date or availability timeline for the AI Dashcam Plus or AI OmniCam Plus. Fleets interested in the hardware should contact Motive directly for delivery schedules and whether pilot programs are available before full commercial release.
