ShipStation Adds LTL to Parcel Platform, Targets Multi-Mode Shippers
New LTL tool consolidates parcel, less-than-truckload, and truckload visibility in one system for small and mid-sized shippers juggling separate carrier portals.

Why does ShipStation's LTL launch matter for small shippers?
ShipStation released a less-than-truckload capability inside its parcel platform, letting small and mid-sized shippers manage parcel, LTL, and truckload shipments from one interface instead of logging into separate carrier websites. The move targets businesses that have outgrown parcel-only workflows but lack the IT budget to stitch together enterprise freight systems.
Ned Woodward, who runs logistics for Spiceology, a Spokane spice brand that ships direct-to-consumer, LTL to broadline distributors, and truckload to big-box retail, said his team used to visit individual carrier sites to generate labels manually. That process consumed hours and required multiple employees to handle a limited order volume. After adopting ShipStation for parcel five years ago, label generation dropped from one to two minutes per order to five to ten seconds.
"Taking 5 to 10 seconds to print a label versus 1 to 2 minutes per order, that's real savings right there," Woodward said. He noted that when COVID shut down restaurants, Spiceology's direct-to-consumer orders surged roughly 50% overnight, forcing the company to automate fulfillment or drown in manual work.
What automation rules save the most time
Woodward said automated rate shopping delivers the biggest efficiency gain. The platform captures a shipper's business logic (preferred transit times, cost thresholds, delivery requirements) and pre-selects the carrier as each order imports. That reduces the workflow to exception management rather than manual decision-making on every shipment. Shaving roughly a minute off each order across hundreds of daily shipments produces material labor savings, he estimated.
Travis Rimel, Chief Product Officer at ShipStation Global, said the new LTL tool is built for similar configurability. The platform will soon split a single order across multiple modes, routing part of a shipment via parcel and the remainder via LTL using automated rules.
The visibility problem when you run three shipping modes
Spiceology's logistics footprint now spans e-commerce parcel, LTL, and full truckload, with each channel carrying distinct carrier requirements, accessorial charges, and delivery prep standards. Woodward said consolidating visibility across those modes, rather than checking three separate systems, is the immediate value he expects the new LTL integration to offer businesses like his.
ShipStation acknowledged that track-and-trace data quality degrades as shipment size moves from parcel toward truckload. The company said normalizing freight data is a priority on its product roadmap.
What this means for shippers outgrowing parcel
Small shippers that add LTL or truckload lanes typically face a choice: keep using separate carrier portals for each mode, or pay for enterprise TMS software built for much larger operations. ShipStation's LTL launch sits in the middle, letting a business that already runs parcel through the platform add LTL without migrating to a new system or training staff on a second interface. For a shipper running a few hundred orders a day across multiple modes, that consolidation translates directly to fewer login credentials, fewer data-entry errors, and less time spent reconciling shipment status across disconnected systems.
