ABB Launches 800-kW Depot Charger That Scales to 10 MW

ABB E-mobility released an 800-kW cabinet charger designed for full-scale electric truck depots, fleets running extensive EV operations, smaller fleets with fast-charging needs, or public charging sites in high-demand areas.
How much power can the X-Series handle?
The X-Series starts at 800 kW per cabinet and scales from 800 kW to 10 MW and beyond. A single installation can support more than 100 charge points. ABB says the architecture decouples AC/DC and DC/DC conversion, so a site commissioned with two 800-kW cabinets (1,600 kW total) can continue to scale on the same infrastructure without replacing the base hardware.
What efficiency does the X-Series deliver?
The cabinets use liquid cooling and continuously achieve 98% AC-DC conversion efficiency. That figure matters for depot operators paying demand charges, every percentage point of conversion loss shows up as wasted kilowatts on the utility bill. At 800 kW input, 2% loss is 16 kW of heat; at 10 MW, it's 200 kW. Liquid cooling keeps the cabinets running at rated output without thermal throttling, which air-cooled units sometimes hit during back-to-back charge sessions in summer.
What configurations are available now?
ABB currently offers two X-Series configurations, though the company did not disclose the specific power or charge-point breakdowns for each. The product line is specified for future power levels, and ABB plans to extend the system to multi-megawatt scale. No timeline was provided for additional configurations or the full 10-MW rollout.
What this means for depot planning
The decoupled architecture addresses a common depot-expansion problem: fleets that start with 10 electric trucks and 1.6 MW of charging capacity often face a full infrastructure replacement when they add another 20 trucks two years later. If the X-Series delivers on the scalability claim, a fleet can add cabinets and charge points without tearing out the original AC service or DC distribution. That reduces the cost and downtime of phased EV adoption.
The 100-plus charge-point capacity also fits the operational reality of depot charging, most fleets charge overnight on a staggered schedule, so peak simultaneous demand rarely hits the nameplate total. A 10-MW installation might serve 120 trucks if charge sessions are spread across an eight-hour window. The question for any fleet considering the X-Series is whether their utility can deliver 10 MW to the site and what the demand-charge structure looks like at that scale. Some fleets running California's $1 billion EV truck rebate have found that utility interconnection timelines, not charger availability, set the pace of EV deployment.
ABB did not release pricing, lead times, or the names of fleets currently piloting the X-Series. The company also did not specify whether the system integrates with existing depot energy-management platforms or requires proprietary software.
