Hendrickson launched the Electraax e-axle for medium-duty trucks, a single-speed electric drive unit developed with Driventic that eliminates multi-speed gearbox complexity for pickup-and-delivery duty cycles.

What does the Electraax e-axle change for medium-duty fleets?

The Electraax uses a single-speed gearbox to reduce friction and weight compared to multi-speed designs. Hendrickson says the architecture delivers a smooth ride without shift-quality concerns, a practical advantage for stop-and-go routes where a multi-speed transmission would cycle constantly. Fewer moving parts in the gearbox should support longer service intervals and lower component-replacement costs over the axle's life.

Driventic's integrated electric motor and power-dense inverter provide extended peak torque for sustained acceleration, hill climbs, and heavy hauling. The companies did not publish torque figures, continuous power ratings, or thermal-management specs in the announcement.

Which duty cycles does Hendrickson target?

Hendrickson engineered the Electraax specifically for school transportation, food-and-beverage delivery, and last-mile operations. These duty cycles share frequent stops, moderate daily mileage, and predictable routes, conditions where a single-speed e-axle avoids the efficiency penalty of a multi-speed unit hunting for gears in urban traffic.

The lighter-weight design aims to help fleets balance payload capacity against the mass penalty of medium-duty EV battery packs. Hendrickson did not specify the axle's curb weight, the weight delta versus a comparable diesel rear axle, or the payload gain a fleet could expect on a Class 6 or Class 7 chassis.

What does this mean for medium-duty EV adoption?

Hendrickson calls the launch a significant milestone in its electrification strategy as OEMs expand medium-duty EV offerings. The medium-duty segment has seen faster EV uptake than Class 8, driven by natural gas and battery-electric registrations climbing in delivery and vocational applications where depot charging and fixed routes reduce range anxiety.

The Electraax announcement did not include pricing, availability dates, OEM partnerships, or warranty terms. Fleets evaluating medium-duty EVs will need those figures, and real-world service data from early adopters, before the TCO case becomes clear against diesel or CNG alternatives in the same duty cycle.
