Einride will deploy two cabless SAE Level 4 autonomous electric trucks in Ohio this summer, operating between EASE Logistics warehouses in Marysville. The Swedish manufacturer announced the proof-of-concept service Monday as part of Ohio's Truck Automation Corridor Project.
What routes will the Einride autonomous trucks run?
The trucks will transport goods between EASE facilities using both private property and local public roads. The deployment extends the Ohio Department of Transportation and DriveOhio's corridor project, developed in partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation, to evaluate real-world impact on safety, freight efficiency and warehouse operations.
How many autonomous truck platforms is EASE testing?
This marks EASE Logistics' third autonomous trucking project alongside DriveOhio. The Columbus-based company is one of the few logistics providers in the country actively testing multiple autonomous freight platforms in live operational environments.
Einride's vehicles are already running in daily commercial operations elsewhere in the United States. The cabless design eliminates the traditional tractor cab entirely: no windshield, no sleeper berth, no driver's seat. The trucks are monitored remotely.
What does SAE Level 4 mean for fleet operations?
SAE Level 4 autonomous capability means the truck can handle all driving tasks within defined operational design domains without human intervention. If conditions exceed those parameters, severe weather, construction detours, sensor failure, the system is designed to bring the vehicle to a safe stop rather than hand control to a driver who isn't present.
For warehouse-to-warehouse shuttle routes on known roads, L4 removes the driver labor cost but adds remote-monitoring overhead and requires geofenced route planning. The technology does not yet handle open-highway long-haul or unpredictable urban delivery.
Why Ohio for autonomous truck deployment?
Ohio and Indiana have invested in connected-vehicle infrastructure along Interstate 70 and other corridors to support autonomous testing. The Truck Automation Corridor Project provides a regulatory sandbox and data-sharing framework that lowers the barrier to entry for manufacturers and carriers willing to run proof-of-concept operations.
Most autonomous truck deployments to date have concentrated in Texas, Arizona and the Sun Belt, where weather is predictable and winter road conditions don't challenge sensor arrays. Ohio's climate, freeze-thaw cycles, road salt, lake-effect snow, will test whether the technology holds up in Midwest operating conditions.
What this means for small fleets
Einride's cabless trucks are not available for general purchase. The company operates them as a managed service, the fleet pays per load or per mile, and Einride retains ownership, maintenance responsibility and remote-monitoring staff. That model works for high-volume shuttle routes between fixed facilities but doesn't fit the variable-lane, customer-driven dispatch most small fleets run.
The Ohio deployment is a proof of concept, not a commercial rollout. EASE Logistics is testing whether autonomous electric trucks can handle repetitive short-haul freight reliably enough to justify the service cost. If the pilot succeeds, it signals that autonomous technology is moving beyond controlled Sun Belt highways into real Midwest logistics networks, but adoption for owner-operators and small fleets remains years away, constrained by route flexibility, service-model economics and the need for human drivers on anything but the most repetitive lanes.
