When will Proterra's U.S.-made battery cells be available?
Proterra will offer a U.S.-manufactured cell option for its Onyx battery platform starting in 2027, giving transit agencies and commercial fleets a domestic alternative to the South Korean cells currently used in the company's battery packs. The Onyx platform today uses cylindrical nickel manganese cobalt lithium-ion cells from LG Energy Solutions, manufactured in South Korea.
The move addresses two pressure points for fleet operators: Buy America compliance for federally funded transit projects, and supply-chain risk tied to single-source offshore cell production. Transit agencies buying electric buses with Federal Transit Administration grants face domestic-content requirements that often hinge on where battery cells, the highest-value component in an EV powertrain, are made. A U.S. cell option simplifies compliance and can unlock grant eligibility that foreign-sourced packs complicate.
What the U.S. cell option means for fleet TCO
Domestic cell production typically carries higher unit cost than Asian imports, but the delta narrows when tariffs, ocean freight, and inventory-carrying cost are factored in. For a transit agency ordering 40-foot electric buses in volume, a U.S.-sourced battery pack may add 3 to 5 percent to the powertrain cost but cut lead time by eight to twelve weeks and reduce exposure to port congestion or trade-policy shifts. The calculus flips further if the domestic cell qualifies the vehicle for federal tax credits or grant preference.
Proterra has not disclosed which U.S. cell manufacturer will supply the Onyx platform or whether the domestic cells will match the energy density and cycle-life specs of the current LG cylindrical cells. Energy density matters for range and payload, a lower-density cell requires more volume or weight to hit the same kilowatt-hour capacity, eating into cargo space or adding curb weight. Cycle life drives replacement cost: if the U.S. cells degrade faster than the LG cells, the pack may need replacement or warranty service sooner, raising total cost of ownership even if the upfront price is competitive.
Onyx platform adoption and the domestic supply gap
The Onyx battery platform powers a range of commercial electric vehicles, including transit buses and medium-duty trucks. Proterra emerged from bankruptcy in 2023 and sold its bus-manufacturing business to Phoenix Motor, retaining the battery and charging divisions. The battery unit has since focused on selling packs to third-party OEMs rather than building complete vehicles.
The 2027 timeline for U.S. cells arrives as other domestic battery projects face delays. Cummins, Daimler, and Paccar indefinitely postponed the startup of Amplify Cell Technologies' Mississippi battery plant, citing weak Class 8 EV demand and capital constraints. That delay leaves fewer near-term options for fleets seeking U.S.-made cells for heavy-duty applications, making Proterra's domestic-cell offering one of the few alternatives if it ships on schedule.
What fleets should ask before spec'ing the U.S. cell option
Fleet managers considering the U.S.-sourced Onyx packs in 2027 orders should press Proterra and the vehicle OEM for side-by-side performance data: energy density in watt-hours per kilogram, cycle life to 80 percent state of health, thermal-management requirements, and warranty terms. If the domestic cells require different cooling or charging profiles than the South Korean cells, that may force changes to depot infrastructure or service procedures.
Pricing transparency matters. A U.S. cell option only makes sense if the total installed cost, including any tariff savings, freight reduction, and grant eligibility, offsets the likely premium over the LG cells. Transit agencies should model the grant-funding impact: if the domestic pack unlocks an additional 10 percent federal match, the effective cost may be lower than the foreign pack even if the sticker price is higher.
Serviceability is the other variable. If the U.S. cells come from a supplier with limited commercial-vehicle experience, early adopters may face longer diagnostic times and parts delays when a module fails. Proterra's warranty and field-support network will determine whether the domestic option is a safe spec or a beta test.
