Orange EV Books 600-Unit Terminal Truck Order in Largest Deal to Date

Kansas City manufacturer says order reflects shift from pilot programs to full-scale yard electrification as fleets move past testing phase.

How many electric terminal trucks did Orange EV just sell?

Orange EV landed a 600-unit order for electric terminal trucks, the largest single purchase in the company's history. The Kansas City manufacturer said the deal reflects a broader shift in yard operations as fleets move from limited pilot programs to full-scale deployments of battery-electric spotters.

The order size marks a departure from the typical 5- to 20-unit test deployments that have characterized electric terminal truck adoption since Orange EV launched its first production units in 2015. The company did not disclose the customer name, order value, or delivery timeline.

What changed in the terminal truck market

Terminal trucks operate in a narrow duty cycle that makes them ideal early candidates for electrification. They run predictable routes within a single yard, return to the same charging point every shift, and rarely exceed 25 mph. Range anxiety is not a factor. Cold-weather performance matters less than in over-the-road applications because the trucks spend most of their time moving trailers short distances between dock doors and parking spots.

Orange EV's T-Series terminal truck uses a 160 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack. The company claims 8 to 12 hours of runtime per charge depending on load and ambient temperature. Charge time is 6 to 8 hours on a 480-volt Level 2 charger. The truck uses a single-speed direct-drive transmission with no clutch or multi-speed gearbox to service.

Maintenance intervals are longer than diesel equivalents because there is no oil to change, no diesel particulate filter to clean, and no DEF system to service. Orange EV publishes a claimed total cost of ownership advantage of $30,000 to $50,000 per truck over a 10-year lifespan compared to a diesel spotter, driven primarily by lower fuel and maintenance costs. Those figures assume $3.50 per gallon diesel and $0.10 per kWh electricity, which may not hold in all markets.

Charging infrastructure remains the constraint

The 600-unit order will require substantial charging infrastructure. At 160 kWh per truck and one charge per day, the fleet will draw roughly 96 MWh daily. Installing that capacity means transformer upgrades, utility service expansions, and months of lead time for interconnection approvals.

EV charging infrastructure utility lead times are now the longest delay in commercial EV deployments, with some fleets reporting 12- to 18-month waits for utility service upgrades even after chargers are ordered. Orange EV has not disclosed whether the customer already has charging infrastructure in place or whether installation is part of the deal.

Terminal truck duty cycles allow for overnight charging, which avoids demand charges that hit fleets charging Class 8 tractors during peak hours. A yard running three shifts can stagger charge times to flatten load and reduce utility costs. That advantage disappears if the customer tries to fast-charge during shift changes.

What this means for yard electrification

The 600-unit order suggests at least one large fleet or logistics operator has moved past the pilot phase and committed to electrifying an entire terminal or multiple facilities. Orange EV competes with BYD, Capacity, and Kalmar in the electric terminal truck market. Diesel incumbents like Ottawa and Capacity still dominate total terminal truck sales, but electric models are gaining share in high-utilization yards where fuel savings justify the higher upfront cost.

Orange EV has not disclosed total production capacity or whether the 600-unit order will require a manufacturing expansion. The company assembles trucks in Kansas City and sources battery cells from third-party suppliers. Lead times for lithium-iron-phosphate cells have shortened since 2023, but a 600-unit build still represents a substantial battery procurement commitment.

Fleets considering terminal truck electrification should verify that their utility can support the required charging load before ordering units. The truck cost is predictable. The infrastructure cost and timeline are not.
